The Oyster Perpetual ref 1002 originally featured a robust 26 jewel calibre 1560 automatic movement. Calibre 1560 possesses a Rolex p/n 7980 balance assembly with a Breguet hairspring, running at 18000 bph and a 42-hour power reserve.
Rolex updated the movement in the reference 1500 Date from the Cal. 1565 to the Cal. 1575 around the mid-1960s. The updated movement brought with it a higher frequency of 19,800bph (compared to the 18,000 offered by the Cal. 1565) and a slightly longer power reserve (48 hours compared to 42 hours). The 1560 movement, which is seen on Explorer in the early 1960’s, beat at 18,000 VPH and were made until around 1967. As early as 1965 Rolex rolled out the 1570 movement, which beat at a faster 19,800 VPH.
Later flatter automatic movements, such as the calibers 1560 and 1570, provided for thinner watches, and were in production for over 25 years. In 1977, Rolex introduced calibre 3035 into the Oyster Perpetual line, sometimes referred to as a “high-beat” movement because the beat rate was upped to 28,800 bph — a modern standard.
