The 5500 Air-King was the classiest Rolex ever made. I've owned steel/gold OPs, steel/gold GMTs, and Subs galore. All I wear now are my 5500, and an occasional wearing of my 1500. The size, simplicity, classic design, and understated elegance of the 5500 makes it the finest all-around everyday watch available. Why is the Air-King unloved? First reason, its price. Yes, for some mysterious reason, Rolex decided to price the Air-King well below its real value. In fact, Rolex was offering a nice gift to the Rolex aficionados, and only them were able to recognize the gift and took it. The others snobbed it and just missed it.

The Air King has a good bit of heft and has great wrist presence but some Omega watches are thicker again without a Faraday cage, check the specs. Rolex will probably slim it down next time but they couldn’t in 2016 when it was released.

My recommendation: yes, the Air-King is definitely better for comfort (on a slender wrist) than any of the bigger or full size mechanical Rolexs; but its lack of a date window, I think, makes it a bit dull to live with after a while. The Air-King isn’t a classic looking Rolex. It breaks too many rules. Compared to its closest alternative, the Explorer, the Air-King is decidedly brash.
